Laurence A. Nafie is Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biology in Department of Chemistry of Syracuse University and the Editor in chief of Journal of Raman Spectroscopy. Research in the Nafie-Freedman group is focused on the development and application of Raman spectroscopy and vibrational optical activity (VOA). He is now giving a course named “Theory, Measurement, Calculation and Recent Advances of Raman Scattering and Raman Optical Activity” in the conference room of State Key lab of Catalysis from June 23 to July 9. The purpose of this course is to present the basic principles of to the current state-of-the-art in Raman scattering and Raman optical activity (ROA). Students taking this course should have already had courses at the graduate or undergraduate level in analytical chemistry and molecular spectroscopy. A general background in quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry is assumed to cover explanations of the physical basis of the techniques studied. It is assumed that students will be able to learn and develop an understanding of the course content both in class and independently outside of class.
Lecture Topics
A general lecture on
“Vibrational Optical Activity: Principles and Recent Applications”
will be given in the institute hall in June 30,and discussions with students will be among the schedule.
