New Progress for the Simultaneous CO2 and H2S Conversion by a Solar-driven Electrochemical Process

503Group POSTED:2018-03-15

The research team led by Prof. LI Can in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) designed a new solar-driven electrochemical process that can realize the simultaneous conversion of CO2 and H2S into value-added products. The corresponding results were published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. (2018, DOI: 10.1002/anie.201713029).
CO2 and H2S are generally concomitant with methane in natural gas and traditionally deemed useless or even harmful. These gases, which are in enormous quality and traditionally deemed useless or even harmful, have to be pretreated for further processing. However, if they can be used to produce value-added products, more economic and environmental benefits will be obtained. Yet, researchers have mainly focused their attentions on H2S conversion. For example, H2S was converted into sulfur and water in air with Claus technology. To the best of our knowledge, there are rare reports on the simultaneous conversion of CO2 and H2S into value-added chemicals. Herein, a novel solar-driven electrochemical process is demonstrated using zinc oxide encapsulated by graphene catalyst for CO2 reduction and graphene catalyst for H2S oxidation mediated by EDTA-Fe2+/EDTA-Fe3+ redox couples. The as-prepared solar-driven electrochemical system can realize the simultaneous conversion of CO2 and H2S into carbon monoxide and sulfur at an atom-economical way. This conceptually provides an alternative avenue for the purification of natural gas with added economic and environmental benefits.
Aiming to solve the energy and environmental issues, Prof. LI Can’s team has been dedicating to converting CO2 and H2S to useful chemicals with renewable energy resources. As for CO2, they recently designed ZnO-ZrO based catalysts for selectively conversion CO2 to methanol and lower olefins, respectively (Sci Adv. 2017,3, e1701290ACS Catal. 2017, 7, 8544-8548). As for H2S, several approaches such as photocatalytic, photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic-electrochemical strategies have been developed to convert H2S into value-added chemicals (J. Catal. 2009, 266, 165-168.Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 4399-4403, Energy Environ. Sci. 2014, 7, 3347-3351ACS Catal. 2016, 6, 6198-6206.). It is worth noting that high quantum efficiency of up to 93% was obtained for photocatalytic H2 production from H2S splitting reaction under visible light irradiation, which represents a benchmark value in this field. Following the above work, the present study of producing value-added chemicals by consuming CO2 and H2S simultaneously provides an environmentally benign and economically feasible avenue for the purification of natural gas.
