A Highly Efficient Hybrid Photocatalytic System Comprising ZnS as Light Harvester and an [Fe2S2] Hydrogenase Mimic as H2 Evolution Catalyst

 

 

    

    Artificial photosynthetic H2 evolution has attracted much attention of scientists. In our previous work, the concept of hybrid photocatalyst, namely using semiconductor as light harvester and hydrogenase mimic as H2 evolution catalyst, was developed to improve the light-harvesting efficiency and stability of artificial photosynthetic systems. High H2 evolution activity was achieved over Co complexes/CdS hybrid photocatalyst. The high H2 evolution activity of the hybrid system do benefit from the broad spectral absorption of semiconductor (J. Catal., 2011, 281: 318http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jcat.2011.05.015).

    Inspired by the exciting results mentioned above, we further extend the concept of hybrid photocatalyst into [Fe2S2] hydrogenase mimic, whose structure is more similar to nature hydrogenase. The [Fe2S2] hydrogenase mimic was assembled onto the surface of semiconductor ZnS by adsorption. ZnS acted as light harvester and [Fe2S2] hydrogenase mimic acted as H2 evolution catalyst. This hybrid catalyst system shows high photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution (TOF, 100h-1) with excellent stability, as demonstrated by achieving a TON of more than 2607 based on [Fe2S2]. The stability of the hybrid photocatalyst is much superior to homogeneous photocatalytic system based on [Fe2S2] hydrogenase mimic. Under same conditions, the photocatalytic activity of [Fe2S2]/ZnS hybrid photocatalyst is even higher than Pt/ZnS. The efficient photo-generated electron transfer from ZnS to [Fe2S2] hydrogenase mimic mainly accounts for the high photocatalytic activity of the hybrid photocatalyst. This work further demonstrates the feasibility of using semiconductor as light harvester and a molecular complex as H2 evolution catalyst. The combination of semiconductor with molecular catalyst may provide the strategy for the design of stable and inexpensive artificial photosynthetic system for highly efficient H2 production.
